Late

First, we try to describe what is running on 50. It 's probably you should not run with the elite. It 's not likely to allow sub 5 miles minutes, 35 minutes, or children's 10k marathon in under 3 hours. It may not facilitate faster leaps out of bed in the morning, infinite energy that lasts all day or the return of the resistance that has led to 20 years. But take note that everything on that list had a qualifier. Because none of them is possible. Perhaps some, or all of them are your goals. It 's great. We must not let unrealistic expectations deter you from taking up running.

So, what do you say? Do 50, or close to 50, or over 50. Maybe (probably) that you want to make a lower footprint in the sand at the beach. After a flight of stairs, you breathe faster than you should and your latest annual check-up, not your doctor so subtly suggested that the high blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are all related to the weight. Those jeans keep shrinking after washing and is such a relief to loosen the collar on the way home from work. You try to watch your diet and if you just had the time and energy should go to the gym. But running? Be serious, not at your age. In addition, you may have hated running in gym class or the military. Your friends will make fun of you, neighbors roll their eyes and embarrassment is not your idea of a fun day. Is not enough, everyone knows of at least 1 case where a guy dropped dead while running.

If you're still reading, and in agreement with most of the above points, let me tell you why you might want to start racing --- on your age. There is no other aerobic exercise that burns more calories in less time than running. Every mile is worth about 100 calories at once, with some residual burning effect lasting even after you've stopped. Unlike the purchase of an expensive gym membership, or new equipment treadmill or exercise, the execution does not involve great expense. Buy a good pair of shoes for about $ 75, and you're on the road. The feeling you have at the end of the run is one that will last and will return. You should have learned by this time in your life that what people think or say about you is only partly dictated by what you do. In other words, people talk no matter what you do, so why not do something positive for you?

Do not stop reading this and start running. Instead, why not start to walk for short distances and do medical appointment that you've been putting off. Once you have the OK from the Doc, start integrating some very slow, intermittent running in your walks. Take a couple of weeks to go from all walk, run and possibly in some particular race. Do not be discouraged if you need to take breaks to walk. You should take the walk breaks. It may be a couple of months before you run most of the time. It's all right. The 2 most important things about your performance are that 1) Start and 2) Continue. Time, distance and frequency are also irrelevant. You should set goals, but not be too hard on yourself. You waited 50 years to start if you miss a couple of days, it does not matter. In a short span of time, you'll learn the secret of the runner: it is not running that we love, is the after-running feeling we love .......
